The Pichi Richi is a tourist railway that retraces a section of the original Ghan line in South Australia's Flinders Rangers.
Starting from Port Augusta, the steam-operated trains travel 43 kilometres from Port Augusta to the small township of Quorn on a section of the Ghan's preserved narrow-gauge line.
Compared to the modern and luxurious Ghan, this train journey is slow and uncomfortable but Avery says it's this very discomfort and trip down memory lane that makes the journey so good.
"It is a 'discomfort' that you actually enjoy, because this is more than a journey; it is an experience of history, of one of Australia's most famous rail journeys in its original form."
The original Ghan took three slow days to reach its destination, Alice Springs, but today trips on the Pichi Richi Railway are a more comfortable one-day event.
