"N. Korea attempted to test an unidentified type of missile from Shinpo area in the south this morning, but we suspect the launch has failed." The ministry said in a statement.
The missile launch attempt came amid rising tensions with the U.S.that it is sending an aircraft carrier strike group to waters off the Korean Peninsula to deter potential N.Korean provocations such as a nuclear test.
US president Donald Trump has vowed a tough stance against the North and threatened unilateral actions if china doesn't work with it to curb the isolated country's nuclear program.
Pyangyang has staged so far five nuclear tests, two of them last year, and analysis of satellite imagery suggests it could be preparing for a sixth.
Citing intelligence officials, it could be less than two year away for the North to achieve the ability to strike the US with self-developed intercontinental missiles.
